Meeting Individuals Where They Are

Meeting individuals where they are—figuratively—is a fundamental aspect of my approach. Nestled in the heart of Ann Arbor, I work with clients in a music therapy studio (a quaint, creative space shared with other music therapists) that is the quintessential setting for transformative music experiences. This delightful space is where meaningful work towards clients’ personal goals is accomplished. Music is the tool that connects us to each other and to our musical selves.

Within each of us resides a musical self, one that instinctively responds to the power of music. This concept was initially championed by the ingenious Creative Music Therapy duo, comprised of the pianist and composer Paul Nordoff and the luminary special education teacher Clive Robbins. Central to my mission, regardless of whether I'm engrossed in music therapy sessions, imparting music lessons, or delivering solo performances or ensemble marvels, is the endeavor to connect with these musical selves—both within others and within myself.

When was the last occasion your musical essence reveled in engagement? Was it during the morning commute, enveloped by harmonies? Or perhaps it was the Taylor Swift concert that resonated with you last week. Could it have been the serene Sunday spent at church, infused with melodic devotion?

The realm of music therapy interventions encompasses a splendid array of uniqueness, each falling under the umbrella of these four distinctive categories:

Composition: Crafting new melodies and harmonies.

Improvisation: Spontaneous and in-the-moment musical expressions.

Receptive/Listening: Engaging with music through listening and reflection, not necessarily active participation.

Re-creation: Mastery of existing musical compositions.

One avenue that leads us to the heart of our musical selves is through the captivating art of improvisation. Yet, for some, improvisation may seem like uncharted territory, particularly for those who yearn for a grasp of the rules before they partake. A modest analogy that puts this into perspective is something we engage in daily: conversation. Just like in conversation, there are guidelines. Upon meeting someone, we extend a warm greeting. When we pose queries, our tone and inflection diverge from those we use for making statements. And there are other nuances: Conversation is a dynamic exchange, rooted in friendliness and courtesy, responsive to others, and enriched by emotional bonds. These very principles also seamlessly apply to the realm of improvisation.

Our journey into improvisation begins with a musical utterance—a melodic "Hello" of sorts. This gesture opens a realm for the harmonious contributions of others present. Employing improvisation as a conduit with clients unveils a powerful tool that caters to their emotional, physical, cognitive, and spiritual needs. This medium often cultivates an environment primed for metamorphosis, empowerment, and ongoing evolution. Indeed, it's within our musical selves that a treasure trove of potential awaits, a tapestry of insights and sensations eagerly longing to be explored.
